Former Indian off-spin bowler and current Chennai Super Kings player Harbhajan Singh made headlines recently, when he opted out of the upcoming Indian Premier League 2020 tournament, due to personal issues! However, he is now again in the headlines, for a totally different reason, altogether! It has come to light that Harbhajan Singh has filed a case of fraud, against a Chennai businessman. Reports state that Harbhajan has been cheated out of Rs. 4 Crores, by a Chennai businessman named G Mahesh. However, we hear that Mahesh has now applied for anticipatory bail and is claiming innocence in this case.
It has been learnt that Harbhajan Singh had lent Rs. 4 Crores to businessman Mahesh, in 2015. Now, we hear that on his last visit to Chennai, Harbhajan had filed a cheating case, after one of the cheques given to him by Mahesh for Rs. 25 Lakhs, had bounced due to insufficient funds. Following this, Vishveshvaraiah - the Assistant Commissioner of Police from Neelankarai, has summoned Mahesh for an inquiry. However, Mahesh's counsel has now filed a petition at the Madras High Court, seeking anticipatory bail, in the event of arrest. The petition details that Mahesh and another person named Mrs. Prabha Sekar had indeed availed a loan of Rs. 4 Crores from Harbhajan Singh, in 2015 but had also submitted the original deeds of an immovable property located in Thalambur, as security for the loan.
The petition further states that Mahesh had also given 8 blank cheques also, while availing the loan and also executed a Power of Attorney document for the property, which has also been registered. Mahesh's counsel has also stated that the businessman has finished repaying an amount of Rs. 4 Crores & 5 Lakhs and is only yet to pay the interest component but there had been a delay in this due to the lockdown restrictions brought on by the COVID situation. They also state that the cheque bounced as Mahesh had issued stop-payment instructions to the banker. Mahesh's petition argues that the case moved by Harbhajan Singh had been done with an ulterior move to harass him and had mentioned that the Cricketer had chosen to file a complaint with the Police rather than against the petitioner. Harbhajan Singh is yet to respond to the comments from Mahesh's side. Stay tuned for updates...
