The advancement of technology has been a boon as well as a bane for humankind! Now, we have the world at our fingertips with the advent of smartphones and internet and apps! However, this has also lead to a number of issues, some known and some unknown! There have been many conspiracy theories that Facebook has been spying on its users and now, adding to those rumours, we have a solid lawsuit! Facebook is being sued for spying on Instagram users, through their mobile phone cameras. A privacy suit has been filed by an Instagram user in San Francisco. However, Facebook has blamed a bug for this error which induces false notifications and has also stated that the bug has been fixed!

The lawsuit has been filed based on media reports from July, which reveal that the photo-sharing app Instagram appeared to be accessing iPhone cameras, even when they weren't being actively used! However, Facebook has denied all these allegations and blamed it all on a bug, which it claims, it has been fixing. Facebook states that the bug had triggered false notifications of Instagram using phone cameras. The lawsuit has been filed by New Jersey Instagram user Brittany Conditi, at a Federal Court in San Francisco! She had contended that the app had been intentionally using the phone cameras for the purpose of collecting "lucrative and valuable data on its users that it would not otherwise have access to."

The complaint also continued, "obtaining extremely private and intimate personal data on their users, including in the privacy of their own homes". However, Facebook declined to comment on these statements! There was another case last month, which alleged Facebook of using facial recognition technology to illegally harvest biometric data of more than 100 million Instagram users. However, Facebook had responded by stating that Instagram doesn't use facial recognition technology. Facebook owns Instagram and WhatsApp as well. Stay tuned for updates...
