There has been a disastrous boiler explosion at a thermal power plant in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, this morning! This explosion happened at the Stage 2 of the Central Government owned NLC India Limited (formerly and more commonly known as the Neyveli Lignite Corporation), in Cuddalore. The blast has already claimed the lives of 6 people and left 17 others injured. Unfortunately, this is the second such blast to happen here in the span of the last 2 months! All the injured employees were rushed to the Apollo Hospitals in Chennai, according to reports!
A statement from one of the directors of the Power Plant mentions that the boiler which blasted, was not in operation and that investigations are underway. Of the injured people, 10 are said to be contract employees while 7 were said to be regular employees. The Cuddalore Superintendent of Police M Sree Abhinav stated that 6 people died and 17 people were injured in an explosion at a boiler of the Neyveli Lignite plant. Visuals played on a news channel showed smoke coming out of the Neyveli plant at Cuddalore.
Reports from the accident spot claimed that an in-house fire fighting team of NLC India Limited was the first responder at the scene. The local Police and government authorities are also said to have rushed to the spot immediately. Some reports state that there were fears of a number of other workers being trapped inside the plant when the explosion took place at the fifth unit of the thermal power station-II, when the workers were resuming the daily operations, this morning. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to this incident and put up a tweet expressing his anguish and also mentioned that he had spoken to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and assured all possible help. An earlier such incident happened on May 7th this year and 8 workers were injured in it. We pray for the injured workers to recover soon and express our deepest condolences to the families of the departed souls!
