Most people who reside in Tamil Nadu or have visited the state would know that the names of places and localities have two versions - the original Tamil version and an anglicised version! Now, the Tamil Nadu government has issued an order that the names of all places in Tamil Nadu should be spelled in English with their actual Tamil pronunciation. This rule shall come into effect in all 37 districts of Tamil Nadu, as announced by the Minister for Tamil Culture & Tamil Development - Mafoi K Pandiyarajan, at the State Assembly, in the 2018-2019 session!

Names of 1018 places changed in Tamil Nadu

As per this announcement, names of 1018 places in Tamil Nadu have been identified for correction and the Revenue Department & Municipal Administration Department have been entrusted with the task of making the name changes. The GO in this regard has four columns with the entire list of names of all the places that stand to be corrected. Going forward, the English names of places shall reflect the spellings of their names being pronounced in Tamil. Some examples of the changes would be Mylapore becoming Mayilaappoor, Tondiarpet becoming Thandaiyaarpettai, Egmore becoming Ezhumboor, Triplicane becoming Thiruvallikeni, Porur becoming Poroor and so forth!
