For long, the debate of Police brutality has raged in many places. While some people allege that Police brutality exists, some argue that it is not common and that in some cases a strong hand is needed to control the situation and for the greater good. Thoothukudi is no stranger to clashes between the Police and the public as it is just over a year ago that protests against the Sterlite factory in that district led to such a clash and the loss of many lives. Now, another shocking incident, alleging Police brutality has come to light. Bennix (31) - a mobile shop owner was arrested by the Sathankulam Police on June 19th, for keeping his shop open very late and violating lockdown norms and his father Jayarajan (58), who runs a woodwork shop was also arrested for the same reason. The duo were taken to the Kovilpatti sub-jail, as all other local jails were not able to take in inmates.

On June 22nd (Monday), Bennix complained of chest pain and fainted within the Jail premises itself and breathed his last at the Kovilpatti Government Hospital. Similarly, his father Jayarajan's health condition also worsened and he too lost his life around 4:30 am at the same hospital, on June 23rd (Tuesday) morning. This lead to the family members, friends and relatives of the deceased to protest against the Police, alleging brutality. The group took to protesting and blocked the Tiruchendur-Nagercoil Highway. Now, the leader of the Opposition party in Tamil Nadu - MK Stalin of the DMK Party, has questioned the government and demanded that the Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy answer the family of the deceased, as he also wields the Home Department portfolio. While many people are demanding answers for these custodial deaths, the Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police (SP) Arun Balagopalan has stated that the father-son duo had prior health issues and this was the reason for them losing their lives.
