The world considers the COVID-19 Novel Corona Virus Pandemic to have originated in the Wuhan Province of China, which is said to be Ground Zero for this deadly Virus. The outbreak of this Pandemic has changed everybody's life in some way or the other and has adversely affected the lives of many! Teams of researchers and scientists are racing against time to identify a cure or vaccine to control the spread of the corona virus. Though Russia has registered the first vaccine - Sputnik V, there are a number of question marks over the efficacy of this vaccine as it has not completed all phases of trials as yet. The vaccine candidate being jointly developed by the Oxford University & AstraZeneca and was in the third phase of trials, was put on hold after a volunteer developed some unexpected illness.
A number of vaccine candidates are in the final stage of testing but very few are close to moving to the manufacturing stage. Meanwhile, China has now approved the trials for a nasal spray type COVID vaccine. This intranasal vaccine candidate marks the 10th COVID vaccine from China to progress to the crucial human testing stage. Reports state that this vaccine candidate contains weakened flu virus with genetic segments of the corona virus's spike protein! The trials for this vaccine would be the first time that COVID vaccine volunteers would not be given shots but would rather be receiving a spray through their nose. This nasal spray vaccine is being jointly developed by researchers of the Xiamen University and Hong Kong University and also by Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy Enterprise Co.
Though this is the first nasal spray vaccine candidate for COVID-19, a nasal spray vaccine has already been developed for the flu and is recommended for use among children as well as adults, who wish to avoid the common injection shots. Reports state that scientists across the world are working to come up with sprays for all vaccines, to avoid the use of needles. Reports of this intranasal COVID vaccine state that when administered, it would mimic the natural infection of respiratory viruses and induce the body to naturally respond against the pathogen that cause COVID-19! There is a widespread belief that a nasal spray vaccine would work better against COVID as it mainly affects the respiratory system. Now, this vaccine candidate joins the 35 other vaccine candidates across the world, which are in various stages of human trials! Stay tuned for updates...
