With the race to the Playoffs for IPL 2020 well and truly open, the first match of today's double-header pitted Shreyas Iyer's Delhi Capitals against Eoin Morgan's Kolkata Knight Riders! A win for DC will take them closer to a Top 2 finish while a win for KKR will strengthen their push for a Top 4 finish! Shreyas won the toss and decided to bowl first, on a fresh pitch with a covering of dark grass! Both teams had a couple of changes with players returning from injury or being out injured! Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana walked out to open for KKR and began positively with a couple of 4s in the first over itself! The quick Anrich Nortje prised out Gill with the 5th ball of his first over and cambe back to castle Tripathi in the 6th over, leaving KKR on 36/2 at the end of their Powerplay! Rabada got Dinesh Karthik cheaply, bringing Narine and Rana together at the crease. Both players went berserk and smashed almost all DC bowlers to all corners of the ground!
By the end of the 10th over KKR had gotten to 75/3 and were going great guns. Irrespective of who the bowler was - Stoinis or Ashwin or Nortje, every single one of them was taken apart and Rana got to his 50 in the 12th over with a 4 with Narine following suit in the 15th over. It took Rabada to come back and break the partnership, removing Narine for 64 off just 32 balls! Morgan walked out and joined in dishing out more carnage as he too struck a number of boundaries. Stoinis wrapped up a disappointing spell with the back-to-back wickets of both Rana and Morgan, in the 20th over, leaving KKR on 194/6, with DC needing 195 to win! This was always going to be a tall ask but with the kind of batsmen that Delhi has, especially in their current form, it would not be much of a struggle (or so that is what we thought)! With no Prithvi Shaw in the team, Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane opened the innings for DC!
Delhi had a woeful start as Pat Cummins had Rahane trapped LBW for a Golden Duck off the first ball of the chase! Dhawan followed soon after, being bowled to another peach of a delivery from Cummins, in the 3rd over. DC were in a spot of a bother but had two of their best batsmen at the crease in Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant! The duo saw off their Powerplay at 33/2 but the going was slow, allowing the required run rate to grow high. Pant's Strike Rate was far lower than regular and he seemed to be playing rather cautiously and DC were 76/2 by the end of the 11th over! KKR brought on the mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy and he had Pant off his 2nd ball itself! Hetmeyer struck a huge 6 off Narine but was taken by Varun, in his 2nd over which saw Iyer also fall off the very next delivery. Varun's 3rd over broke the DC chase as he got both Stoinis and Axar Patel, to register figures of 3-0-12-5! Though Ashwin and Rabada swung around their bats, it was too little, too late. Cummins picked 1 more wicket and Ferguson added 1 to his tally to leave DC on 135/9 at the end of their 20 overs! KKR had made a massive turnaround and DC's NRR took a major hit as they lost by 59 runs! Rightfully, Varun Chakravarthy was adjudged the Player of the Match! The Points Table is definitely beginning to look interesting!
