For all fans of Indian cricket, especially those who have followed it since the 90s, the name Mohammad Azharuddin brings back bittersweet memories. The stylish leg glance, the silken wristwork that would come into play while caressing the ball on the leg-side, the charismatic field presence, the upturned collar, the picture perfect catches in the slip region or wherever he was standing but also the agonisingly close losses, the confusion of the match-fixing scandals, et al! However, Azharuddin shall forever be known as the captain under whom Indian legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid entered the game and flourished. He has been off the limelight in recent times, despite there being some headlines of him wanting to take up administrative positions in domestic cricket and also became the President of the Hyderabad Cricket Association!
Today, Mohammad Azharuddin escaped from a nasty car accident, while travelling to Ranthambore! Reports state that Azharuddin was travelling with his family to Ranthambore by car, when it met with an accident, in the Soorwal region of Rajasthan. Further reports quote his personal assistant as stating that the former Indian captain, escaped unhurt! This accident is said to have occurred on the Kota Mega highway, close to the Soorwal Police Station. Despite the Cricketer's car suffering some major damage, Azharuddin is said to have thankfully escaped unhurt, while another person travelling with him, sustained minor injuries. Reports state that Azharuddin and his family were shifted to another car and have since arrived at their hotel, in Ranthambore!
Azharuddin was in Ahmedabad last week, to attend the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) Annual General Meeting, where the approval for having 10 teams in the IPL, was taken. He had attended the AGM in his capacity as the President of the HCA. He also played in the exhibition match between the President's XI and Secretary's XI! Azharuddin was part of BCCI Secretary Jay Shah's XI and also scored a match-winning 37. Sourav Ganguly hit a half-century for his President's XI but it went in vain as the Secretary's XI won the match. This exhibition match happened at the newly renovated Motera Stadium, which is all set to host 2 Tests in India's series against England, which is set to happen in February-March of 2021!
