India is having a terrible 2020 with so many people losing their lives to the deadly COVID-19 Novel Corona Virus Pandemic! However, there have also been a number of other accidents which are happening across our country and the recent flight accident at Kozhikode airport left many people shocked! Now, we have come across another accident! A hotel in Vijayawada, which was being used as a COVID care facility, caught on fire and burned down! The Swarna Palace Hotel on Eluru Road, in Vijayawada, was taken on lease by Ramesh Hospital to treat COVID patients. There were about 50 patients who were undergoing treatment at this facility! At around 5:00 am, a fire broke out and began spreading across the facility!
The rapidly spreading fire was said to have been caused by an electrical short circuit. As the COVID patients were already suffering from respiratory problems, they had severe difficulties in breathing and the thick smoke further aggravated their issues. People on the road mention that they could hear many patients screaming for help, from the windows of the rooms in the top floors! The staff of the hotel noticed the flames from the first floor and immediately alerted the fire safety authorities, who rushed to the spot and put out the fire! Unfortunately, the fire is said to have spread to the higher floors, till the 5th floor by the time the fire safety authorities could reach there. However, we hear that the fire safety personnel rescued over 17 COVID patients by bringing them down a ladder!
On ground reports state that the fire alarm didn't work properly and that there was also a delay in opening the back door of the facility. We also hear that there were about 10 paramedical professionals present at the facility to take care of the patients. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is said to have spoken to the Prime Minister and updated him of the situation. He also announced a compensation of Rs. 50 Lakhs to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted his condolences and mentioned that he had spoken with the Andhra Pradesh CM. He also assured all necessary support from the Centre.
