We have heard of a number of train accidents due to various reasons and none of them have ever boded well for the passengers. Earlier today, a train's engine got derailed, after running over an elephant, in the state of Odisha. The Puri-Surat Superfast Express ran over an adult elephant in the Sambalpur region of Odisha and the engine's front trolley got derailed due to the mishap! Reports state that the train was on the single line between the Hatibari and Maneswar railway stations and collided with the mammoth at around 2:05 am. Sources from the East Coast Railway (ECoR) revealed that no passengers were hurt in the accident and also that the driver and assistant driver were safe!

Further reports state that only 6 wheels of the engine had derailed upon impact with the elephant and that otherwise, there had been no other damage. The train had reportedly left the Hatibari station at 1:55 am and was running at a speed of 50 Kmph. Despite an elephant warning been already imposed, the driver could only notice the elephant after getting very close to it and applied the emergency brake. Sambalpur Divisonal Railway Manager (DRM) - Pradip Kumar and other senior officials rushed to the spot along with the accident relief train and other accident relief medical equipment. A new engine was immediately rushed to the spot from Rairakhol and fitted to the coaches, before they were all taken back to Hatibari, while the DRM and his team supervised the rerailment works!

DFO Sanjit Kumar and his team of forest officials reached the spot soon to check on the situation. The rest of the elephant herd had remained in the same area, to guard the fallen elephant's carcass and surrounded the engine. They were then guided by trained officers into a nearby forest. This caused a delay in train services along the route. The Puri-Durg Special Express was halted at Jujomura and the Koraput-Bhubaneshwar Special was held at Sambalpur. It is indeed good fortune that none of the passengers had gotten injured but sad that a majestic beast laid down its life due to the accident!
