The COVID-19 Novel Corona Virus Pandemic broke out in the Wuhan Province of China but has been ravaging almost all the countries of the world for over seven months now! Teams of researchers and scientists are struggling to identify a cure or a vaccine to end this deadly virus. The death toll caused by this virus is huge and the number of infections across the world is increasing rapdily with each passing day! However, bucking the trend, New Zealand had become COVID free earlier this year and had gone 102 days without any new COVID infections! New Zealand became the first COVID free country in the world, after discharging it's last COVID patient from the hospital, more than 3 months back!

Unfortunately, there seems to be a resurgence in the virus, in New Zealand! Health officials stated that 13 new cases were identified in Auckland today, taking the tally of new active COVID cases to 69. The abrupt cropping up of new Corona Virus cases in Auckland last week saw the nation's largest city going into total lockdown mode. With this sudden surge in COVID cases, the general elections in the country, which are set to happen on September 19th, might get postponed. Current opinion polls show Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's Labour Party to be the winning side but the Conservative opposition might use this resurgence of COVID as ammunition to delay the elections and push for a win for themselves!

Masks are currently recommended in New Zealand but are not mandatory. However, the Health Minister John Hipkins addressed the media and stated that the government was working towards ensuring an adequate supply of masks in the country. He also stated, "We could make it (masks) compulsory and spend a lot of time on enforcement, what we need is a cultural acceptance amongst all New Zealanders!" New Zealand's neighbour Australia has also seen a resurgence of COVID cases in two of its largest states - Victoria and New South Wales but the number of cases have been on a downward trend. New Zealand health authorities believe that the sudden resurgence of COVID in the country might be from international travellers but genome testing has not found any conclusive evidence from quarantined travellers! Stay tuned for updates...
