Disappointed loan applicant wields gun against bank manager, arrested
A branch of the Canara Bank in Coimbatore saw some dramatic moments after a middle-aged man whipped out a gun and held the bank manager on its point for a while, till being apprehended. The man reportedly was disappointed after his loan application was rejected after months of waiting.
According to sources, Vetrivelan (44), of Kanuvai, had a factory near Somayampalayam. He already has a loan of ₹25 lakh at the Andhra Bank and reportedly was seeking for an additional loan. He had come to the Canara bank's branch in Coimbatore city with a tout identified as one Gunabalan, of Tatabad.
The CCTV footage shows the bank manager walking in first, closely followed by the tout, who makes for a chair on the side. The accused then walks in directly and holds an airgun gun to the tout's head. The bank manager also tries to intervene, only to be assaulted. The video goes on to show several other employees try to subdue to the man, who hits out with no reserve.
The New Indian Express reports that the tout had told Vetrivelan that he would help him get a loan of 1 crore, on a commission basis. While it is unclear if Vetrivelan gave him any money, he had been hanging on balance since March this year. A few days ago, the bank manager told him that his application was rejected. The man is thought to have waited for the day when the tout would be present, to assault him. The Race Course Police arrested VEtrivelan and booked him under IPC sections 352, 452, 420 and 506 (ii). He was lodged at the Coimbatore central prison.
