Right from the outset of the COVID-19 Novel Corona Virus Pandemic's outbreak, healthcare professionals and doctors have been working non-stop to help contain the spread and treat the infected patients. Some doctors have worked round the clock to help those in need. For time immemorial, people have looked up to doctors as next to being gods for they hold the power of life and death in critical situations and have been the shield protecting humanity against most diseases! Now, after the COVID pandemic, the position of doctors has risen multi-fold in the eyes of all people! However, doctors are humans too and we must respect their sensibilities.

Now, the Indian Medical Association has called all doctors to come forward for a strike on December 11th! This call by the IMA is to all doctors practitioning modern medicine to withdraw all non-COVID and non-essential services on December 11th. This is as a protest against the Central Council of Indian Medicine's recent notification, authorising post-graduate practitioners in specified streams of Ayurveda to be trained to perform general surgical procedures. The doctors' body has added that all emergency services will function alongside the ICUs and CCUs but no elective surgical case will be undertaken.

The statement from IMA read, "Launching the freedom struggle of modern medicine from the forces of mixopathy, IMA has directed public demonstration activities and withdrawal of non-essential and non-COVID services on December 11, 2020, from 6 AM to 6 PM." A statement by IMA national President Dr. Rajan Sharma said, "The recent policy tilt as evidenced in the medical pluralism advocated by the National Education Policy 2020 and the four committees of NITI Aayog for officially integrating the systems of medicine in medical education, practice, public health and administration as well as research ostensibly for a one nation one system policy will ring the death knell of modern medicine system as a whole. The notification of the amendment to the CCIM Act on postgraduate Ayurveda surgery and the entitlement to study and practice independently have to be seen as another step in advancing and legitimising mixopathy." The IMA has also called for a public demonstration on December 8th, following COVID protocols. Stay tuned for updates...
