Former Judge CS Karnan became notorious when he became the first sitting High Court Judge to be summoned before the Supreme Court of India and also sentenced to jail. He was sentenced to 6 months prison, while he was serving as a Judge in the Calcutta High Court. He had been summoned before the Supreme Court, which was presided by a 7-Judge Bench, headed by the then Chief Justice JS Khehar. The panel had directed the West Bengal Police Chief to take Karnan into custody but he then evaded arrest for a number of weeks. Eventually, Karnan was tracked down by his mobile phone signal and was taken into custody.

Ex-Judge Karnan was booked by the Police last month, for his derogatory comments against several former sitting and judges of the High Court and Supreme Court, as well as their spouses. On October 27th, the Chennai Police Cyber Cell had registered a case against Karnan following a complaint registered by an advocate of the Madras High Court. This complaint was then followed by a letter written by senior lawyers of the Madras High Court to the Chief Justice of India - Sharad A Bobde. The complaint was against Karnan over a video in which he is allegedly heard making objectionable remarks against women and also threatening judicial officers and spouses of sitting & former judges with sexual violence.

Some reports also state that in the video, Karnan had made allegations against some Judges of the SC and HC that they had sexually assaulted women court staff and fellow women judges and had also naming the alleged victims. The lawyers's letter the Chief Justice is said to have spoken about Karnan's video amounting "to a horrific act of violence and an affront to the dignity of all women and reveal a deep-seated misogyny", thereby seeking immediate action. Karnan had faced several allegations of corruption during his career but had claimed that he had been targeted because of his Dalit background. CS Karnan was first appointed a judge of the Madras High Court in 2009 and was transferred to the Calcutta High Court, in 2016! He also contested in the last National elections as a candidate of the Anti-Corruption Dynamic Party (ACDP), which he himself had floated in 2018!
