One of India's most prominent television journalists and the current Editor-in-Chief of Republic TV - Arnab Goswami, is somebody who is either liked or hated but not somebody who can be ignored. Often becoming the subject of a number of memes for his aggressive style of interacting with people on his talk shows, he is known across the country to be a very vociferous person. However, he has now come into the spotlight for an entirely different reason. He was recently arrested by the Raigad Police, in connection with a suicide abetment case, from 2018! When the case was heard at a court in Alibaug today, Goswami is said to have alleged that he was assaulted by the Police and had been injured on his back and hand!

Following this, the magistrate directed the Police to take Arnab to consult a civil surgeon and produce him at Court, only after a second medical examination. Video clips have been playing on media channels, showing officers forcing Arnab Goswami into a Police van. Reports state that in 2018, an architect and his mother died by suicide, due to Goswami's Republic TV not paying them their dues. A case of abetting suicide had been registered against Arnab and two other people. A statement released by Republic TV read, "Arnab Goswami's arrest in the related suicide case has been made as part of larger vindictive exercise against an independent journalist and an independent news organisation. The Anvay Naik suicide case was investigated and closed by a Court of Law, after a closure report by the Police noted that no case was made out in April 2019."

The statement went on to tell that the very fact of the open physical assault on Arnab, his family and team Republic, especially over a closed case and when it was caught on camera and broadcast to the whole world, is proof enough of the desperation levels of the Maharashtra Government & Maharashtra Police. This move has also earned the ire of many top political leaders from across the country, especially opposition parties from the state of Maharashtra. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah and a number of other ministers slammed this move by the Maharashtra Police and even termed it to be a move against the free fourth pillar of society and especially against the freedom of the Press. Defending the move, leaders from the ruling Shiv Sena Party from Maharashtra have said that Arnab had been allowed to go free by the previous government and that the current government would never let any injustice against a Marathi man, go unpunished! The Editors Guild of India has also expressed shock at the way Arnab has been treated. Stay tuned for updates...
