Netflix has announced a Korean adaptation of its Spanish-language action thriller series Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) and will be directed by Kim Hong-sun, known for his work on popular TV dramas like The Guest, Voice and Black. A collaboration between BH Entertainment and Contents Zium, the Korean version of Money Heist will also include Ryu Yong-jae and his team as screenwriters for the 12-part show. Ryu and his team are credited with working on the Netflix original series My Holo Love and tvN series Psychopath Diary

Speaking about Money Heist being remade in Korean, show creator and executive producer of La Casa de Papel Alex Pina said, "Korean creators have been developing their own language and audiovisual culture for years. They have managed, like our series, to go beyond cultural borders and become a point of reference for thousands of viewers around the world, especially among young people." He further added, "That is why I find it fascinating that the world of ‘La Casa de Papel’ is so attractive to Korean creators as to do an adaptation. The fact that the action is set on the Korean Peninsula also seems to me to be a milestone which I am really delighted about."

Money Heist in Spanish premiered in 2017, with the fifth and final part currently under production. The show's fourth season (the second part of the second season), four weeks after its release in April 2020, was watched by more than 65 million households, Netflix said in a statement earlier. The series was by far the most-watched non-English show by 2018 and also one of the most-watched series overall on Netflix. The company also stated, "The international popularity of the Spanish series La Casa de Papel is proof that significant works based in different cultures and languages can be widely distributed by Netflix and loved by audiences worldwide." Characters on the show embodying the names of renowned global cities during their heists have gone on to become popular around the world, with a huge fan following for the series in India as well, of late.
