A reusable face mask has been invented by Israeli researchers who state it can kill the novel coronavirus using heat from a mobile phone charger. Professor Yair Ein-Eli, who leads the research team at Technion University in Haifa, states the process of disinfecting takes around about 30 minutes with users of the face mask advised not to wear it while plugged in.

The new self-cleaning mask includes a USB port that can be connected with a power source such as a mobile phone charger. Upon power being drawn into the mask, the inner layer consisting of carbon fibers subsequently gets heated to up to 70 degree Celsius (158 degrees Fahrenheit), and is enough to kill viruses. Ein-Eli said disposable masks, in high demand globally during the health crisis, were not economically or environmentally friendly. Speaking about the latest invention, he said, "You have to make it reusable and friendly, and this is our solution,".

For now, the prototype of the reusable face mask resembles a N95 mask and includes a valve at the front with rubber bands in place so that they can be stretched around the head. A patent for the mask was submitted by the researchers in late March in the United States with discussions already underway to commercialize it. The researchers say their newly-invented self-cleaning mask will likely sell at a $1 premium over that of a disposable face mask that is normally being used.
