Leading South Indian actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu has been announced to be starring alongside Bollywood star Varun Dhawan in the Indian installment of the upcoming espionage action series, Citadel, created by the Avengers: Endgame directors Russo Brothers' AGBO for Amazon’s Prime Video. Announcing the Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal actor's casting in the upcoming action series, filmmakers Raj Nidimoru & Krishna DK of The Family Man fame informed that filming has begun, while also sharing a picture of her look on the show. They wrote, "Super excited to team up with this powerhouse once again! Welcome @Samanthaprabhu2 to the world of Citadel!."

Based on a screenplay written by Sita R. Menon, along with Raj & DK, production on the untitled Indian installment of Citadel is currently underway in Mumbai, with the team set to head next to locations in North India, followed by Serbia and South Africa. Raj & DK’s D2R Films and Amazon Studios are producing the series, while the production of the Indian original and the worldwide Citadel universe is being overseen by AGBO’s Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Mike Larocca, Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, and David Weil. The first-to-launch Citadel series will star Eternals star Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the lead roles and is planned for a premiere later this year. Some other Citadel productions that have been planned include an Italian original series starring Matilda De Angelis of The Undoing fame.

Speaking about her casting in the Indian installment of the Amazon Prime Video series to Variety, Samantha said, "The Citadel universe, the interconnected storylines between the productions across the globe, and most importantly, the script of the Indian installment really excited me. I am thrilled to be a part of this brilliant universe conceptualized by the Russo Brothers’ AGBO. I am also looking forward to working with Varun for the first time, on this project. He is someone who is full of life and cheer when you’re around him." Filmmakers Raj & DK added, "We are elated to work with Samantha once again after The Family Man. Once we had the script down on paper, she was an obvious choice for this character. We couldn’t be happier to have her on board."
