Ponniyin Selvan got a worldwide grand opening on 30 September 2022 and has been getting rave reviews for it ever since. It has been 4 days since its release and the film has been receiving critical acclaim from fans and critics alike, who have praised the direction, performances of the cast, score, visuals, and faithfulness to the novel.

Speaking of the cast's performance, Jayam Ravi, who played the the titular role AKA Arunmozhi Varman, has got some immense praise from one of the biggest names in film history. It was from none other than Superstar Rajinikanth himself. Ravi mentions how a minute long conversation with the Superstar meant the world to him. He also says how he felt by this entire moment that he was so excited about that he took to his official Twitter handle to share this with his fans and followers.

Mani Ratnam's epic period action magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan: I was produced by Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah under the banners of Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions. It serves as the first of two cinematic parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel of the same name. The film stars a stellar ensemble cast consisting of including Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman, R. Parthiban and Lal. The music was composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography by Ravi Varman, editing by A. Sreekar Prasad, and production design by Thota Tharani.
