In tragic news, Kerala-based trans model and actress Sherin Celin Mathew was found dead in her rented apartment at Chakkaraparambu in Edappally near Kochi on Tuesday, May 17. She was 26. According to the police, the popular Malayalam artiste was found hanging from a ceiling fan by her roommates, with authorities later confirming the same upon their arrival at the flat. It is further being reported that Sherin committed suicide while she was on a video call as her mobile phone camera remained turned on. Reports state that she had been depressed for a while as a result of a few disputes and differences of opinion with her friends. 

Hailing from the Alappuzha district, Sherin Celin Mathew had been residing in Chakkaraparambu over the last few years. A case has been filed for unnatural death and a prima facie suggesting it was a suicide, police reports state. Furthermore, a probe has been launched and an investigation is currently underway into Sherin's demise, while her body has also been sent for a post-mortem. She has appeared in minor supporting roles in a few Malayalam films apart from being active in modeling. Sherin's suicide is the fifth such case by a transgender individual in the city in the last year. 

Sherin Celin Mathew is the second personality from the Malayalam entertainment industry after model-actress Sahana was found dead in her apartment on her 22nd birthday a few days back. Her parents have since alleged that she had suffered domestic abuse from her husband Sajjad, who was later taken into custody by the police. In 2021, a trans-woman radio jockey Ananya Kumari Alex was found dead in her Kochi apartment, who was also suspected to have committed suicide.
