A film that is keenly being awaited by fans across the country, Thalaivi, the ambitious biopic on former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has National Award-winning actress Kangana Ranaut portraying the late stateswoman. Made as a bilingual in Tamil and Hindi, the upcoming film directed by A. L. Vijay and jointly produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri and Shailesh R Singh under the Vibri Media banner will also be dubbed in other languages. Apart from Kangana Ranaut, Thalaivi has Arvind Swami playing legendary actor and late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran, popularly known among the masses and the classes as MGR.

With the shooting on Thalaivi wrapped sometime back, the makers on Wednesday treated fans to a special surprise on the 73th birth anniversary of J. Jayalalithaa by announcing the release date of the upcoming pan-Indian film. Taking to Twitter, Kangana Ranaut unveiled a special motion poster and dropped the big announcement that Thalaivi will be hitting screens worldwide in all languages on April 23, 2021. She tweeted, "To Jaya Amma, on her birth anniversary Witness the story of the legend, #Thalaivi, in cinemas on 23rd April, 2021."

The update of Thalaivi's release date will no doubt come as a big happy news for fans, including ardent followers of J. Jayalalithaa, who have been waiting for the film to come out for some time. It is to be noted that a number of stills, including a teaser for Kangana Ranaut's Jayalalithaa and Arvind Swami's portrayal of MGR were released and received a thunderous response from fans everywhere. Thalaivi will also feature several other notable names such as Prakash Raj, Jisshu Sengupta, Poorna, Madhoo, Bhagyashree in pivotal roles, with music being composed by GV Prakash, while legendary writer KV Vijayendra Prasad has penned the film's screenplay. 

Thalaivi will trace the life on the life journey of Jayalalithaa from cinema to politics, including MGR and several other notable political leaders in Tamil Nadu. For her role in the film, Kangana had gained around 20kgs and informed fans about her physical transformation on Twitter last year. She wrote, "I played the first superhuman girl on Indian screen, thanks to my body, a rare combination of dainty yet strong looking. In my 30s, I had to gain 20 kgs for Thalaivi and do Bharatanatyam, it left my back severely damaged but no bigger gratification than to play a role to perfection."
