UTV denies selling A Wednesday remake rights
After the phenomenal success of A Wednesday, starring Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher, many Southern filmmakers including Kamal Haasan are very eager to remake it and are holding talks with UTV in this regard. A while ago, it was even rumoured that UTV has sold the Tamil and Telugu remake rights to Kamal Haasan. But UTV clearly denied these reports and said it is true that many filmmakers have been contacting them for the remake rights, but they have not parted with the said rights yet.
But now, trouble is brewing with renowned Tollywood producer Kiran Kumar Koneru filing a petition in a Hyderabad court against UTV. In the petition, Koneru claims that UTV and he had a struck a deal already about the Tamil and Telugu remake rights of A Wednesday and he even paid an advance amount to UTV to seal the deal. But denying all this, UTV has stated that they have not yet sold the remake rights to anyone and have no idea about the case.
Some view Koneru’s appeal in the court an indication of his apprehension of losing the offer with stalwart Kamal Haasan bidding for it. They deem the producer might have reached the final rounds of talks with UTV and almost had the deal sealed, but now feel UTV might change its mind with Kamal Haasan also keen to acquire its remake rights.
Meanwhile, it looks like Kamal Haasan is very keen in remaking this superb entertainer in Tamil and Telugu. There are even rumours that the thespian has an idea of casting Tollywood actor Venkatesh in a prominent role.
