USA to Kollywood!
With many offbeat films making a mark in Kollywood, several individuals smitten by the silver screen are making attempts to strike it big. In fact, they even forego well paying jobs in the US and find time to learn the art of film-making, so as to express their creative sides.
We already saw Meiporul, directed by Natty Kumar, who, along with his friends in San Francisco, managed to make a simple thriller that was well-received and appreciated by the audience.
A couple of other films that are releasing soon are Achchamundu! Achchamundu! by director Arun Vaidyanathan and Unnai Pol Oruvan by director Chakri Toleti. Another film on the anvil is Varnam by S.M. Raju.
Now what is common among the above directors is that they all had an education in the US, and have returned home to cater to their dreams of making it big in the film world. It may be noted that all of them were software engineers working for top multinational firms. Arun Vaidyanathan underwent a formal course in New York Film Academy, and proved himself with short films, before setting his sights on a full length feature film. Similar is the case of Chakri Toleti, who also left his high flying lifestyle in the US to debut as a director with Unnai Pol Oruvan that stars Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal.
We now see a new breed of film makers with tons of ideas and a different perspective. Several years back, when Nagesh Kukunoor made his first film after returning from the US, people probably thought that it was just a one off case! But, now the NRI tribe is coming in droves to prove the point that they revere Kollywood!
