While the rest of the state was celebrating the release of Vijay's much-awaited Theri, around 60 theatres in Chengalpet area decided to give it a skip. Producer Thanu has confirmed that no one from this area approached them for the distribution rights. Tamil Film Producers Council Secretary T Siva has condemned the issue and also stated that big movies like Kabali and 24 will not be releasing in these theatres. "With respect to Chengalpet area, theatres that have denied screening Theri will be sidelined by the Tamil film producers. Most of the producers have acknowledged that they would extend their support to this issue," he was quoted saying.

The Producers Council is also planning to approach the government to take permission for movie screenings in marriage halls in those areas.
