Subramaniapuram as Ananthapuram 1980

Writer-director-actor M. Sasikumar's path-breaking Tamil film Subramaniapuram (also spelt as Subramaniyapuram), which earned well-deserved phenomenal success in 2008, is being dubbed in Telugu as Ananthapuram 1980.

The Telugu version is produced by M. Ranganath under the banner of Simhapuri Talkies. James Vasanth has composed the tunes for lyrics penned by Vennelakanti. Dialogues are by Shashank Vennelakanti.

Set in Madurai of the early 1980s, Subramaniapuram revolves around five close friends led by Azhagar (Jai) and Paraman (Sasikumar); all five are unemployed and pass their time drinking liquor and fooling around in the streets. Paraman and Azhagu often end up in jail due to frequent fights they land themselves in. Every time they are arrested, an ex-councilor Somu and his brother Kanugu (Samuthurakani) bail them out immediately.

In the meantime, Azhagu and Tulasi (Somu's daughter) develop mutual romantic feelings for each other. Paraman is totally against his friend developing such feelings for any girl. At a time when the five youngsters are directionless, Swathi's uncle Kanagu approaches them with a deadly offer.

He offers them a handsome amount to murder his prominent enemy in politics; if they do it, he promises to also bail them out from police custody. Considering it a turning point in their lives to become rich, the friends execute the murder. But the cunning politician fails to keep his word and the friends are imprisoned. What happens next leads to the climax.
