Sarah: Kollywood is the right place to start my career

Sarah Jane Dias, Miss India (2007), has landed in Kollywood, playing one of Vishal’s lead ladies in Theeradha Vilayattu Pillai. She’s done a number of ads and walked the ramp wearing some of the country’s biggest labels, but in her cine debut, she plays simple college girl.

“At the very outset, let me say that I am more than happy to work in this movie with such a professional team. For a debutante to get an opportunity to work in such a movie is not something to be taken lightly. That said, I must say that I play Priya, a simple college-going girl. Honestly, I did not find the role, it found me! I met director Thiru in Mumbai, and without even an audition, he said, ‘You are my movie’s Priya’ and here I am,” says Sarah.

She’s no simple girl in real life – quite the assertive lady who won’t mince her words. “The reason why many girls from the North debut in Kollywood and then slowly make their way to Bollywood is that the Tamil industry is relatively more open to newcomers. Most of the best directors and cinematographers in the country are South Indians. People here are professional and things are done 99.9% on time. So, if you are trained here, when you go to Bollywood, they’ve already got a package and don’t need to start from scratch. But there have been a lot of girls who have made it big starting from there as well,” says the charming Sarah, who seems to have done her career research well. “So if I get Bollywood offers, I’m obviously going to take them! In fact I intend to step into Tollywood too!”
