Restriction on other language films in Kerala!

The Film Distributors' Association of Kerala (FDAK) has decided not to allow any non-Malayalam movie (including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and English) to release in the state simultaneously with the all India release from April 16. Sadly, the decision came as a major disappointment for Vijay fans in the state, who were eagerly awaiting the superstar’s much-hyped 50th film Sura, slated for May 1 release.

FDAK has decided to implement this controversial decision to support protectionism. The association claims that other language films are currently releasing in as many centres as Malayalam films and smaller Malayalam films are finding it difficult to get theatres. As per the new order of FDAK, other language films can release in Kerala only two weeks after their worldwide release.

Notably, recent non-Malayalam films like Avatar, 2012, Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya, Vettaikkaran, My Name Is Khan and 3 Idiots did fantastic business at the box office in Kerala, dramatically subduing the collections of Malayalam movies in theatres!

Siyad Kokker, president of FDAK, said: "After Vishu, we will not allow the release of any new films in Kerala, unless our terms and conditions are met by the theatre owners. We have also made it clear that other language film can release in Kerala only two weeks after their worldwide release."

It is noteworthy that at a recent public function, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal lashed out at other language films for spoiling the market of Malayalam films in Kerala. "Some kind of regulation has to be put on other language films being screened here. Otherwise our industry will crash. Priority should be given to Malayalam releases at least during the holiday season," he said.
