Mohanlal: Superstar-turned-soldier

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, who portrayed a brave soldier in the war movies Keerthichakra (2006) and Kurukshetra (2008), will officially join the civilian's voluntary army force Territorial Army (TA) on Thursday.

Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor will commission the actor into the Indian Army on Thursday during a ceremony at the Delhi Army headquarters in which he will be conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Army officers told reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Mohanlal will be part of the 122 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) of the Madras Regiment or Kannur Terriers. After the ceremony, Mohanlal is expected to visit his battalion and interact with the troops. He will also visit schools and colleges to meet youth and encourage them to join the Army, officers added.

Mohanlal is the second major catch by the Army to be its brand ambassador after legendary cricketer and 1983 World Cup hero Kapil Dev, who was also conferred the rank of honorary Lieutenant Colonel last October.
