Lyrical gems

Movie song lyrics have as much value as the music for the album. During earlier days, when veteran poets like Kannadasan, Bharathidasan and Papanasam Sivan wrote lyrics for film songs, there was so much literary value attached to them. Each song taught a worthy lesson to ardent listeners and the songs served as a vital guiding source for the discerning public.

Today, the trend and attitude towards writing movie songs has definitely gone through a major change. Easy gyan and uncomplicated facts constitute the core of today’s song lyrics. Today, almost all top heroes’ intro scenes include a motivating number which adds a sentimental touch to the hero’s character and also improves his image among fans and audiences. ‘Amma Endru Azhaikkada’ from Superstar Rajnikanth’s Mannan and ‘Thuuliyile Aada Vanda’ from Prabhu’s Chinnathambi are some of the all-time lyrical intro songs. Among contemporary frontline heroes, Vijay’s songs attract the youth. ‘Aadungada Enna Chutthi’ in Pokkiri, that begins as a typical ‘tappankuthu’, showcases the hero as an individual who cares of economically-downtrodden people. ‘Unnal Unnal’ in Azhagiya Tamizh Magan and the ‘Rama Rama’ number in Villu too have some creditable messages in their lyrics and they have also been chart-busters. Also, ‘Dost Bada Dost’ and â€˜Ninaithadhai Mudithidu’ from Saroja have good lyrics with meaningful messages worth pondering over.

Among recent releases, Naal Natchathiram directed by newcomer Sanjay is filled with some lyrical gems. ‘Success, Vazhkaiye Success’ sung by Tippu & Co., ‘Iru kangalin Oliyil’ in Jothimeena, Naveena and Swathy’s voices with lyrics written by C.N.R. Shakthi are worth listening to.

Unlike yesteryear films, today's song lyrics are rarely written in chaste Tamil, keeping up with audience tastes and preferences, yet they present some practical viewpoints. On the listeners’ side, there is still a great demand for well-meaning and inspiring lyrics.
