Kanchivaram: Priyadarshan's masterpiece

Kanchivaram – a film which fired up everyone’s imagination at myriad film festivals (at Toronto, Berlin and even Bhutan) – is supposed to release in October, according to a rumour. But there has been no confirmation from Priyadarshan’s camp.

Kanchivaram (also referred to as Kanchipuram) is about weavers who lived in Kanchivaram 80 years ago. The film, marked with communistic overtones, follows the life of a silk weaver in Kanchipuram at a time when weavers were treated like bonded labourers. The poignancy involved in the tale will move your heart.

Avid readers would feel they are reading a masterpiece from O' Henry or Anton Chekhov while watching this film; such is Priyadarshan’s conceptualization and narration. If Priyadarshan has excelled in his script writing and direction, Prakashraj is responsible for breathing life into that script. Prakashraj, who agrees that his role in Kanchivaram has to be the best in his career so far, says that he admires Priyadarshan’s work and is also looking forward to producing such movies in future. The film cast Shriya Reddy as Prakashraj’s wife and a vivacious Shammu as his daughter; both gave stellar performances.

Initially, Priyadarshan said that he made this film to satisfy his creative hunger, not for commercial release. But after requests from many quarters of film industry, which was awed by its reception at international film festivals, he agreed to release it in select theatres.

With the changing tastes of Kollywood audiences, one cay say that Kanchivaram will be well-received and earn plaudits.
