Festival of Indian movies in Chennai
The Alliance Francaise of Madras is conducting a special Festival of Indian movies from 22nd June to 26th June at the AFM Auditorium, Chennai. Five films directed by eminent Indian directors will be screened at this festival, followed by a short discussion about the film's technicalities.
The Alliance Francaise of Madras has been very active in identifying and promoting films which have made an impact and has raised awareness about Indian cinema.
Here is a list of some of the films which will be screened.
22nd June - Life In A... Metro: Directed by Anurag Basu, the film was released on October 5, 2007. The film narrates the individual lives of seven people living in Mumbai, and deals with topics like extramarital affairs, sanctity of marriage, and love.
23rd June - Bombay: It is an award-winning Tamil feature film drama directed by Mani Ratnam, starring Arvind Swamy and Manisha Koirala, with music composed by A.R. Rahman. The film is centred on events, particularly during the period of December 1992 to January 1993 in India, and the controversy surrounding the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.
24th June - Mitr, My Friend: Directed by Indian actor Revathi, set partly in India and the US, Mitr, My Friend was Revathi's debut directorial venture. The film was also noted for having an all-woman crew. The movie won the Best English Film of the year award at the 49th National film awards.
25th June - Zubeidaa: It is a 2001 film directed by Shyam Benegal and written by Khalid Mohammed. Zubeidaa stars Karishma Kapoor, Rekha, Manoj Bajpai, Surekha Sikri, Rajit Kapoor, Lillete Dubey, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal and Shakti Kapoor.
26th June - The Terrorist: It is a Tamil Indian film directed by Santosh Sivan. The film portrays a period in the life of a nineteen-year-old woman, Malli (Ayesha Dharkar), sent to assassinate a leader in South Asia through a suicide bombing. The film won a number of awards at international film festivals. Critic Roger Ebert has included the film in his list of 100 Great Movies.
