Ekambaram shines in Kanthaswamy
Cinematographer Ekambaram had a great role in the box-office success of Kanthaswamy/ Mallanna. His innovative work in the songs and action scenes have earned him lots of admirers. Right from changing the tone of the lighting to green for the night effect to the halo effect in one of the fight scenes, Ekambaram has distinctly put in that extra effort which a movie of that magnitude needed.
Giving fulsome credit to director Susi Ganeshan in giving him the freedom to experiment and innovate, Ekambaram said his effort bore fruit when the audience felt the difference. As most of the fight sequences were rope shots, they needed lighting to be visible to the naked eye,” said Ekambaram in a jocular vein.
Ekambaram said could play around with the camera as the canvas was huge and the imperative need was to meet audience expectations. “Everything about Kanthaswamy was grand and the last thing the audience would have accepted is poor quality lighting. In interpersing the tone of the lights, the audience was kept on tenterhooks about the change. The moonlight effect in one fight had never been seen before in Kollywood. It is a nice feeling at the end that the work has been appreciated by the ones who really matter,”says the cinematographer who showed glimpses of his talent earlier in Iyarkai and E.
Now into Hindi – who else but Priyadarshan to give him the break in De Dhana Dhan – Ekambaram looks forward to opportunities in a language with a mass following.
