Chiranjeevi resigns for united Andhra
This could probably be the biggest show in Tollywood. Actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi resigned from his MLA post, vowing to fight for a unified Andhra. Chiranjeevi, who launched his own political party after bidding adieu to films, became a Member of Legislative Assembly for the Tirupathi constituency in May 2009 after winning with a slight margin.
Claiming that a united state was in the best interests of the people of Telangana, Chiranjeevi submitted his resignation on Thursday. Hoping to ride on the anti-Telangana sentiment in Andhra and Rayalaseema region, the head of the demoralised party called it quits.
He dramatically brandished his resignation letter in front of the media. Stating that the Telangana sentiment has been exploited by political leaders at all levels, he forwarded his resignation to Speaker N. Kiran Kumar Reddy through party leader Kottapalli Subbarayudu.
With Chiranjeevi’s resignation, of the total 18 PRP MLAs, all except one of the two Telangana legislators, have submitted their resignations to the Speaker protesting against the proposed division of the state.
After his sensational resignation, Telangana protesters assembled at the Jubilee Hills office of PRP and shouted slogans against the leader and his party.
At least 10 district convenors and other leaders held a meeting at a city hotel in the wake of Chiranjeevi’s resignation and decided to chalk out their future course of action after eliciting the views of other Telangana leaders.
