Billa is a movie that has a cult following in Kollywood. Let us see, how the movie came to be, and a little of its history! A charming gangster sought by the police, and he being impersonated by a naive man was the basic storyline of Don, starring AmitabhBachchan. This movie released in 1978, was remade as Yugandhar in Telugu, in 1979, and starred NTR in the lead. Don was then remade as Billa in Tamil, in 1980, with Superstar Rajni playing the title role. This took Rajni to great heights, and brought about quite a cult following for the movie!
The same storyline was tweaked a bit and remade in Hindi as Don, with Shahrukh Khan playing the lead! In Kollywood, the earlier Billa was remade with Ajith in the lead, and released with the same title, in 2007. This movie was remade in Telugu as Billain 2009, with Prabhas in the title role. Later, Don had a sequel with SRK reprising his role in Don 2, in 2011. Next in line cameBilla 2 in Tamil, a prequel to Billa, with Ajith in the lead role again! This movie received mixed response from the critics, but firmly upheld the franchise name! However, another movie in this franchise is unlikely in Kollywood, as in contrast to the Hindi Don, Billadies in the Tamil version. Whatever is said and done, the name Billa will be etched in the minds of moviegoers, for quite some years to come!
