Arundhathi’s costumes and jewellery strike awe in Chennai women

Ladies of Andhra Pradesh and�Tamil Nadu have their own reasons to watch Arundhati (also spelt as Arundati or Arunthati) more than once. No, it is not to understand the dialogues or understand the plot. First, they watch the movie for its sheer magnificence; next, they watch it for Anushka's jewellery! Ladies who have not yet seen the film,�might now be compelled to watch it after reading this article! When the makers decided Anushka’s looks for the title�role in�Arundhati should totally match the period, they sought the help of Mumbai-based costume designer Deepa to design her clothes and jewellery.�Insightful�Deepa threw light on the subject and designed the costumes perfectly without any budget constraints as instructed by the producers. All they�desired was the exact period look to make an already-gorgeous Anushka look super gorgeous.

The traditional saree and jewellery that Anushka wears when she plays Jakkamma cost a cool million rupees (10 lakhs)! The labour to make the dress alone cost�one lakh! The biggest surprise is the weight of the jewellery that adorned Anushka – all the jewellery put together weighed a massive 22 kg! Now, that is equal to the weight of the iron suit worn by Robert Downey Jr. in 2008’s biggest blockbuster Iron Man! And Anushka looks more graceful in her movements than Robert Downey in�his heavy armoured suit! We have to salute Anushka for her efforts and weight-lifting capabilities!

Insiders reveal that Anushka really had to struggle when she was completely adorned in this traditional jewellery, but she still managed it so gracefully, giving no clue to the viewer about�its weight.�During the shooting, most of the technicians, stunned at her gold-loaded apperance, referred to her as “Lakshmi”. We have already raved about Anushka looking like a Ravi Varma painting come alive! There is no wonder women revisit Arundhati for Anushka, her costumes�and her jewellery!

Looking so graceful in the traditional dress and jewellery (which exists only in period films, temple jewellery and old family photos these days), Anushka might revive this fashion! Do not be overly surprised if you shortly see fashionable women in South India wearing puffed sleeves and heavy traditional jewellery!
