Film on sister Alphonsa

Director duo Jayeendra Sharma and Jose Roopakala will soon direct a film based on the real life of sister Alphonsa, the first Indian woman who will soon be elevated to sainthood by the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Benedict XVI will declare Sister Alphonsa a saint at St Peter's Square, Rome on Sunday.

The film is made showing a priest narrating the story of sister Alphonsa to some children who visit the Bharanaganom church, Kottayam where Alphonsa was buried nearly 60 years ago. Actress Mahima will don the lead role.

Sister Alphonsa was born on August 19, 1910 at Kudamaloor in Kottayam district. Anna, which was her baptismal name, entered the convent in 1927 and died on July 28, 1946. On February 8, 1986, Sister Alphonsa was beatified by Pope John Paul II during his visit to India.

The film will be produced under the banner of Menangot Movies. Script is by Dr. Saji Kadamala. Satheesh Namboothiri will set music to the lyrics written by Jose Kishore. V.R. Jagannath will handle the camera.

Other cast members include T.S. Raju, Githa Salam, George Alani, Jose Kutty, Thankachan, G.S. Warrier, Sona, Maria, Sali, Anupoma, Ammalu, Anila Santhosh, Mallika, Smitha and others. This film will be released in Kerala and abroad.
