Festival to promote young talent

In a bid to find and promote young filmmakers and talented persons in the campus, the third edition of the SOMS film festival will be held on Thursday at the Renewal Centre at Kaloor, Kochi. This three-day long festival will feature nearly 70 films in two categories, namely General and Campus films.

Veteran actor Madhu will inaugurate the festival at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Madhu will also deliver a lecture at 6 p.m. on the exceptional contributions of late filmmaker P.N. Menon, one of the pioneers of Malayalam parallel cinema. Soon after, Manilal Paadoor's Shadows of the Innerscape, a documentary on the late filmmaker, will be screened, director Kamal, chairman of SOMS, said.

A seminar on the challenges faced by young filmmakers and producers will be held on Friday at 5 p.m. Upcoming filmmakers like Priyanandanan, Roshan Andrews, M.G. Sasi, Anwar Rasheed, Babu Thiruvalla, and Kalavoor Ravikumar will participate. An open forum will also be held each day to provide a platform for discussions on the films screened.

A jury comprising screenplay writer John Paul, director M.G. Sasi and journalist K.B. Venu will adjudge the winners. The best 12 films will be honoured with awards. Organized jointly by the Kakkanad-based School of Media Studies (SOMS), Public Relations Department and the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, the festival is open to the public.
